This programme is only offered at this temple. At its core is the Satja vow which entails the visitor taking an oath not to resort to drinks or drugs again. Of course, keeping promises is not typically a trait of an addict but it is highly important in this particular programme. If the oath is broken, even once, the visitor is not allowed to return. If he sticks with it, he can find himself at the temple from anywhere between ten days and a few months.

Vomiting is at the core of the practical part of the programme. An emetic is given to the visitor and is in fact a herbal recipe which was devised by one of the temple’s founders. This process is a communal one and those who have successfully completed it stay on to help others still going through it.

The purpose of this is to speed up any withdrawal symptoms. They vomit water into a gutter as a direct result from the emetic.

Taking place at an addiction monastery, the key part of this programme is a detoxification treatment which occurs over a ten day period. Items used in this treatment are tea, herbal potions and herbal saunas. There is also an oath taking in accordance with the Satja vow. The programme is highly inexpensive working out at around 3 per day.

If a visitor had an urge to stay on once the detox treatment has finished, he has an option to remain at the monastery for a further eighteen days. Here he will learn, work and meditate. It s designed to strengthen the resolve so he sticks to the Satja. Success rates aren’t something the monks like to discuss but the programme is understood to be a fairly successful one. The monks believe that as long as the Satja is adhered to, the former addict won’t resort to drinks or drugs again.
